Scalp Serum on Wet or Dry Hair?
Some scalp products are made for damp hair, others for a dry scalp. It depends on what the product is built from. Here is how to tell, and why Formula 01 asks for a fully dry scalp.
Short answer
Follow the label. For Formula 01, the answer is a fully dry scalp: it is an alginate gel, and water left on the scalp dilutes the matrix and lets it run onto the hair.
Should you apply scalp serum to wet or dry hair?
It depends on the serum: watery tonics are often made for towel-dried hair, while gels and film-forming serums go on a dry scalp. Formula 01 is an alginate gel, so apply it to a fully dry scalp. Water left on the skin thins the gel and lets it run onto the hair. Always follow the label.
Why it depends on the product
Thin, watery serums and tonics are often designed to go on towel-dried hair, because a little water helps them spread. Gels and film-forming serums are different. They are built to sit on the skin as a thin layer, and extra water changes that layer before it has a chance to form.
Why water matters for an alginate gel
Sodium alginate is a polymer that holds water to form a soft gel, then dries to a film. Add more water on the scalp and the gel becomes thinner and runnier: it spreads further than you meant, slides onto the lengths and takes longer to dry. That is why Formula 01's directions start with a dry scalp. Water left on the scalp dilutes the matrix.
Wet, damp or dry: what each means
Wet
Straight out of the shower, with water you can feel on the scalp. Not suitable for Formula 01.
Towel-dried
No drips, but the scalp still feels cool and damp. Fine for some watery tonics; still too wet for Formula 01.
Lengths damp, scalp dry
The skin at the roots feels dry to the touch even if the ends are not. This works for Formula 01.
Fully dry
Hair and scalp are dry. The simplest option, and the one the directions describe.
How to tell your scalp is dry
Part your hair and touch the skin along the part with a fingertip. If it feels cool or damp, give it a few more minutes. Thick or long hair holds water at the roots for longer than the ends suggest, so check the crown and the nape, not only the front.
Drying faster without extra heat
- Blot with a towel rather than rubbing.
- Use a blow-dryer on a cool or low setting and point it at the roots, lifting the hair with your fingers.
- If you air-dry, apply after the scalp is dry, even if that is later in the day.
After applying
Spread the serum into a thin film and let it dry, then style as normal. You can blow-dry, use a round brush or a styling product on the lengths. The serum stays on the scalp until your next wash, typically 12–24 hours.
