How to Choose a 2DDR Serum

More scalp serums now list 2-deoxy-D-ribose, also written 2-DDR or 2dDR. The labels vary a lot. These five checks work on any 2DDR serum, including ours.

Short answer

Check five things: the stated percentage of 2-deoxy-D-ribose, the base, whether it is leave-on or rinse-off, the preservative system, and whether the claims stay cosmetic. If a label does not tell you, that is an answer too.

How do I choose the best 2DDR serum?

Choose the best 2DDR serum for you by reading the label, not a ranking. Check five things: whether the 2DDR percentage is stated, the base, leave-on or rinse-off, the preservative system with a chelator, and whether the claims stay cosmetic. Then pick the one that passes and suits your hair and routine.

1. Is the percentage stated?

A label that names 2-deoxy-D-ribose but gives no amount tells you it is in there, not how much. A stated percentage lets you compare like with like. Formula 01 states 2.5% 2-DDR, and states the other five actives too: niacinamide 3.0%, caffeine 1.5%, panthenol 1.0%, adenosine 0.75% and melatonin 0.10%.

2. What is the base?

The same molecule behaves differently in a thin liquid, a gel or an oil. A thin liquid spreads further and can run onto the hair; an oil leaves a slick coating; a gel stays where you put it and dries to a film. Formula 01 uses a clean sodium alginate gel, without added salts, so it stays on the scalp between washes. More on this in why an alginate matrix, with no added salts.

3. Leave-on or rinse-off?

A shampoo or other rinse-off product is on the scalp for a minute or two. A leave-on serum stays there until the next wash. Neither is better in every case, but they are different products. Formula 01 is leave-on, applied once a day to a clean, dry scalp.

4. Is there a preservative system and a chelator?

Any water-based product needs to be protected from microbes once it is opened. 2-DDR is also a reducing sugar, which can react over time, so the formula around it matters. Look for a listed preservative system and, in an alginate gel, a chelator that ties up stray minerals from water. Formula 01 lists sodium phytate 0.10% and ethylhexylglycerin 0.10%.

5. Do the claims stay cosmetic?

Under U.S. law, a product sold to change how the body is built or how it works, or to address a disease, is regulated as a drug, whatever it is called on the box. A cosmetic is about appearance and condition. Language such as “conditions the scalp” or “supports a visibly fuller appearance” is cosmetic. Promises to change the hair itself, or to fix a medical condition, are not. The FDA explains the line in Is It a Cosmetic, a Drug, or Both?

Be careful with any 2DDR product that promises medical results, or that presents work on the ingredient as if it had been done on the finished product. Formula 01 makes cosmetic claims only, and there is no human clinical evidence for it.

The checklist, applied to Formula 01

  • Stated percentage: 2.5% 2-DDR, plus all five other actives stated.
  • Base: clean sodium alginate gel, fragrance-free.
  • Format: leave-on, 1–2 pumps once a day on a dry scalp.
  • Preservation: sodium phytate 0.10% and ethylhexylglycerin 0.10% listed.
  • Claims: cosmetic only. It conditions the scalp and supports the appearance of stronger-looking, thicker-looking hair.

Cosmetic vs drug

Formula 01 is a high-concentration 2-Deoxy-D-Ribose (2dDR) cosmetic scalp serum for fuller-looking hair, designed to support a revitalized, healthy-looking scalp environment.

It is not a drug. It is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. For any scalp or hair concern, talk to a dermatologist.
