2DDR gel: why Formula 01 uses an alginate base

Formula 01 is a 2-DDR gel: 2.5% 2-deoxy-D-ribose in a sodium alginate base. Here is what alginate is, why the serum is thick by design, and how to get a light, even film on the scalp. The gel keeps the roots light, so hair can look fuller and show more body from the root.

What is a 2DDR gel?

A 2DDR gel is a leave-on scalp product in which 2-deoxy-D-ribose is held in a water-based gel rather than a thin liquid or an oil. The gel stays where you apply it, spreads into a thin film and dries without an oily finish. Formula 01 is a 2DDR gel: 2.5% 2-DDR in alginate, for fuller-looking hair.

What sodium alginate is

Sodium alginate comes from brown seaweed. It is a gelling polymer: it holds water to form a soft gel. It is used widely in food and personal care as a thickener.

What it does in a leave-on scalp serum

In Formula 01 the alginate gives the serum its thick texture, so it stays on the part line instead of dripping onto the hair. Spread with the fingertips, it forms a thin film on the scalp that dries to a light finish and stays on until your next wash, so the roots stay light and hold their volume.

Water-based serum vs gel matrix

A thin water-based serum spreads easily and can feel light, but it can also run onto the hair. An alginate gel is thicker at first and sets into a light film. The thickness is by design, not a defect.

Why no salts are added

Divalent salts (such as calcium or zinc) can crosslink alginate and change its viscosity. A clean formula avoids adding those salts so the texture stays predictable. Formula 01 adds no sodium chloride, zinc or copper salts, and includes sodium phytate, a chelator that keeps stray calcium and magnesium from stiffening the gel.

Added salts, or larger amounts of ordinary salt, can also make thickness vary from batch to batch. Leaving them out is a formulation choice about a predictable texture and a shorter, more transparent ingredient list, not a performance claim.

Getting an even film

• Start with a fully dry scalp. Water thins the gel.
• Use 1–2 pumps along the part. More is not better.
• Spread with your fingertips into a thin layer, then let it dry before styling.
